The Gift of Asana

Asana means pose, including meditation, standing, inverting, twisting and balancing. Have you ever wondered what all those poses mean when partaking in a yoga session? How does every asana provide for our health and wellness? What innate wisdom and message is within each pose?


Yoga provides us with the opportunity to slow down, to retreat into the present moment. More happens on the mat with our body and soul than we realize. Every pose we do has meaning and benefits. The sequence of the flow of the asanas also has significant value.

Corpse pose is one of the most challenging poses to do. We lay on our back, allow our body to melt into the mat, our breath softens any tension in our body. We are to breathe and be present. It sounds pretty simple, but it is very challenging for most of us to be still, silent and relaxed. The corpse pose allows your body to drop into a ubiquitous awareness, removing yourself from the rest of the world, allowing yourself to travel to a place of doing nothing, just being.


This place of silent awareness, allowing each part of your body to rest, reduces stress, anxiety and depression by releasing tension. Corpse pose also helps improve your concentration and can help reduce insomnia. Anyone suffering from neurological problems such as asthma, constipation, diabetes and indigestion can benefit from this pose.


I always like to start and end my yoga practice with a corpse pose. It is an excellent way to ground the body, bringing ourselves into the present moment, allowing our breath to get us settled. Ending the yoga session with a corpse pose brings us into a deep meditative state of rest, helping to repair tissues and cells, releasing stress, leaving us rejuvenated.


As you partake in your yoga practice, remember you are giving yourself a gift of asana, a gift that will benefit your body, mind and soul—providing you with longevity and health in your life.
